Rate rises prompt Aussies to choose DIY over moving

With the RBA’s latest rate rise taking the cash rate to a 15 year high of 4.6 per cent, Aussies considering a move have another reason to stay put. Instead of relocating, many are turning their attention to a spring refresh at home, taking on everything from indoor makeovers to overdue jobs outside. New Afterpay data shows pressure washer purchases jumped 38 per cent week-on-week and lawnmowers 37 per cent in early September.

While curtain purchases among Gen Z also surged 87 per cent between the first week of July and the first week of September, with sheer styles proving popular. New data shows pressure washer purchases jumped 38 per cent week-on-week and lawnmowers 37 per cent in early September Afterpay’s Director of Trade & Partner Marketing APAC Emily Marshall said among Gen Z there is a shift toward simple changes that can transform how a room feels without the need for a full renovation. “Swapping heavy winter drapes for something sheer is a small change that can make a noticeable difference, and coming out of winter, light and airy is clearly the look they’re gravitating towards,” she said.

Popular purchases through Afterpay included Spotlight’s KOO Loft Sheer Curtains in Linen, Freedom’s Bardwell Sheer S-Fold Curtains and Bunnings’ Ryobi Compact High Pressure Washer. “I’ve picked up some new linen, breathable sheets and a lighter doona for the warmer nights and I’m planning to add sheer curtains to let in more natural light,” she said. “Moving countries comes with a lot of expenses, so being able to spread out the cost with Afterpay has been really helpful. “It’s meant I can make my new place feel like home without paying for everything at once.” It was a similar story for Sydneysider Luke L who wanted to make the most of his home rather than feel he needed to move somewhere new.

“I didn’t want to do a huge renovation,” he said. “I wanted to make a few changes that would have a big impact, from making my bedroom feel more inviting to turning the garden into somewhere I’d actually want to spend my weekends.” Luke L wanted to make the most of his current home with a spring refresh rather than feel like he needed to move somewhere new. “I’ve also made a few updates to the bathroom and front of the house,” he said. “It’s amazing how much difference a few considered changes can make without having to renovate the whole place. “A fresh coat of paint, a new bed and some work in the garden might sound like small things, but together they’ve made the house feel completely different.

“It’s shown me you don’t have to rip everything out or spend a fortune to fall back in love with your home.” The backyard was also a big focus, including planting trees and greenery, tidying up the lawn and making more room to have friends and family over. “Even simple, low-cost changes like mowing the lawn have made a big difference,” Luke said. “This space makes me feel connected to nature and lifts my mood.” The garden was a big focus for Luke including planting new trees and greenery and tidying the lawn to host family and friends.

Picture: Supplied Using Afterpay for around six years, Luke said it has become a “go-to” when making bigger purchases, like his new bed. “The bed was one of the bigger purchases,” he said. “I paid part of it upfront and put $1,200 on Afterpay, which gave me some flexibility with the remaining payments.

“I paid fortnightly, and I like being able to see exactly what’s due and when. “With a few home projects on the go, splitting some of the costs helped me plan purchases around my other expenses and get started on the updates I’d been putting off.” While he would have likely gotten around to all of the renovations eventually, Luke said it might have taken me a lot longer without Afterpay. “I would have had to tackle one job at a time rather than getting stuck into the bedroom and garden around the same time,” he said.

“Having the things I needed ready to go meant I could make the most of my weekends, get outside and actually see the changes coming together.” MORE: Historic convent’s spooky secret
