Tales of Eternia Remastered Review (PS5) – Bandai Namco Entertainment went on a hearty remastering spree with several titles from the Tales of franchise. Of all the games that got a remaster, Tales of Berseria was the game that did not really need one. The most recent remaster is a game that has needed it for a very long time.
It might not be the most requested, but Tales of Eternia has waited a long time to reach a widespread Western audience. Thankfully, Tales of Eternia Remastered is finally here. How does it hold up after all this time?
Tales of Eternia Remastered Review (PS5) – A Much-needed Re-release of A Beloved Classic Bringing Back A Classic Like all games in the Tales of franchise, this story begins in the small village of Rasheans, where Reid and Farah grew up. On one random day, a ship crash lands nearby, with a girl inside who speaks a completely different language. Before too long, Reid and Farah learn that the neighboring world, Celestia, is on a collision course with theirs.
In order to deal with the issue at hand, the teens must cross the dimensional barrier to reach Celestia and stop the collision from occurring. This release is quite a big deal for a lot of RPG fans. For many people, even those of us who have been in the game for decades, this is the first real opportunity to play Tales of Eternia.
Originally, the game launched in English as Tales of Destiny II, but the official release of Tales of Eternia in 2000 didn’t make it past Japan. Not many copies of the Destiny II were shipped, and the Tales franchise hadn’t made a name for itself in the West until Tales of Symphonia. That didn’t happen for another 3 years.
Likely thanks to Symphonia’s success, Europe received a PSP version of the game under its original name, Tales of Eternia, but it never reached the US. With the remaster, this means that players can finally get their hands on the game anywhere in the world-albeit digitally, since the physical versions of the remaster are only available in the East. Modern Enhancements The team behind this remaster fully realizes that Tales of Eternia released 30 years ago.
At the same time, the team put together a beautiful combination of modern accessibility and retaining the game’s original vision. The remaster comes with high-speed mode, increased experience and money, auto-battles, and even customizable random encounters. These new features allow you to either dig into combat or focus on the story and exploration.
To help with exploration, the game also includes a constant marker to show you where your quest needs you to go. This also applies to side quests, which makes story progression take much less time. In some cases, when you’re too far away from your destination, the prompts don’t always appear.
It’s not perfect, but you quickly find your bearings as you get closer. To boot, you get access to enhanced visuals, updated audio, and even all-new voice acting. The best part about this is that you can switch between the old and the new at any time and in any combination you want.
If you want the new dub with the old music and graphics, the game gives you agency to do that. Inherited Limits As mentioned several times in this review alone, Tales of Eternia is a 30-year old game. No matter how it gets decorated, combat still feels dated.
There’s nothing wrong with simplicity, but the age of the game definitely plays a factor in how enjoyable combat can be. Like all Tales of games, you still chain attacks and artes together in real time. It’s just a much more simplified version of that formula.
There’s nothing wrong with it, and the auto-attack and combat speed settings help, but it’s still fairly simplistic when compared to modern Tales of games. The story in Tales of Eternia is also a story we have seen across many RPGs. Yes, this game came out well before many games used this type of plot.
At the same time, many modern players won’t have nostalgia to accompany them on this journey like they do with some of the heavy hitters that came out around 2000 that also received remasters. Unfortunately, though, a lot of the narrative intrigue takes a good long while to really take hold. Thankfully, like most Tales of entries, the characters make it all worthwhile in the end.
There’s a lot of charm here, even after all this time. Give the characters time to bloom, and lean into the modern enhancements as needed to get you to the heart of what makes Tales of Eternia a franchise classic. A Much-needed Re-release of A Beloved Classic Absolutely, fans of the franchise must play Tales of Eternia Remastered , especially if they never got a chance to.
This remaster includes some great quality of life improvements that help blend the old with the new without tarnishing the original vision. The game’s age still comes through in many aspects, but the new additions help pave the way for a new audience to experience a long-sought franchise entry in the Tales of franchise. Tales of Eternia Remastered is available now.
